All the pretty birds

Look who I met! Isn’t he beautiful?

Barn Owl

Barn Owl

He exuded calm self-assurance and was not the least bit ruffled by the press of people trying to get close enough to stroke his chest (those feathers - so soft!) or take his photo.

Below: his rather fiercer looking companion, a peregrine falcon.

Peregrine Falcon

And this is a Harris Hawk:

Harris Hawk

Not native to Ireland, the falconer told me, but an American blow-in. Very handsome all the same.

But my heart belongs to that little owl!

Hi!!

Just stumbled across your blog when googling U211...I’m a fellow student, absolutely bricking it over the looming exam, and very very pleased to find someone else in the same position!

There’s just an unbelievable amount to cover. Did you see - they posted a list of fifty terms to revise for part one of the exam on the uni website. I think part two confuses me the most. I don’t quite understand what they want from us, but I get the feeling it’s something pretty specific that I’m missing entirely. Part three is gigantic but I think if we just study one book inside out then it ought to be ok.

*And breathe*

I honestly have no idea how people with families and full time jobs are supposed to have room for all of this in their heads..how are you managing?

And lovely photographs by the way :) The first one sort of reminds me of Hedwig from Harry Potter…

Hi Lexa, thanks for taking the time to commment.

“how am you managing?” um, badly? It’s not helping that I’m starting A210 on Sept 27.

The glossary thing is HUGE relief. HUGE! Makes revision a whole lot easier to tackle.

Question 2 is all about analytical frameworks. Have you downloaded Nafisa’s document from the OUSA U211 forum yet? If not, do so NOW! It’s in the revision notes folder. At my day school last week our tutor gave us that document as the course team thought it was so good that they have advised all the U211 tutors to refer their students to it.

While there are many text types that could come up in that question my tutor told us to be sensible about our revision as a text type that isn’t covered in great depth in the course materials is unlikely to turn up as we simply wouldn’t have enough material to answer with. So you can rule out texts like graffiti. But the biggies are things like Child Directed Speech, language in the workplace, political rhetoric, etc.

She also advised us to cite as many theorists as possible saying that theorists = marks. I’m terrible at remembering names so this is something I’m likely to struggle with :(

She also advised us to revise TWO blocks in depth just in case we get stumped by the question for our preferred block.

She also told us she thought we were all mad to be doing this course! She thinks that our ‘part-time’ course covers the equivalent amount of ground as the first year of her full-time degree in linguistics did! Which nearly made me feel better ;)

At this point I will just be happy to scrape a pass and leave U211 far behind me come Oct 7! Far, far behind!

Good luck Lexa!

Mmm I know the feeling. I’ve got my Spanish L194 exam in two weeks, and I begin the creative writing course on the 17th Sept. Happy days!

Just had a look on the OUSA forum - had NO idea that was there!!Downloaded that document, plus a few others - thanks for the heads-up!It might have done more harm than good though, as I’m now doubley stressing over the fact that everyone seems to have done a ton more revision than I have!

The remembering names thing - it’s probably the one thing I don’t have a problem with, mainly thanks to the genius of Derren Brown and his memorising techniques.. Basically just mentally attach the theorists names to the theory using some weird and memorable link. So for example, to remember that Goffman is the theorist behind Face work, I think of Face - Scoff - Goffman. Scoff your face like Goffman. :-P It’s a little strange but it works!

And yes, I think we’re definitely mad to be doing this course. It’s been interesting, but such an overload of info, and I thought I’d be totally fine with the reading - but with the DVDs and extra bits and pieces, plus my Spanish course, it’s all been a bit mental really. I think we should all have a party when it’s over!

Good luck to you too! And if you happen to be based in London and in need of a revision partner, let me know!
