In the dead of night

“But that huge shadow is more than my only moon, more even than my destruction: it has the innocent slipping advent of the next generation, which enters in one night of joy, and leaves a meadowful of lamenting milkmaids when its purpose is grown to fruit.”
from By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, Elizabeth Smart

Moon 1

I did not have a good night, racked with fits of coughing that left me breathless so that by 3am I gave up on any notion of getting to sleep. I reread the first part of By Grand Central Station, it is a long term favourite of mine and sometimes when I am ill I would rather turn to a much treasured book that I know and love than a fresh read, it is somehow more soothing, like the company of a trusted friend.

Then I spent a little while painting in the hope that it would help take my mind off how terrible I was feeling.

Moon 2

This began as something completely different, I’ve been experimenting with different backgrounds and textures and this was originally part of those efforts. But being the dead of night, the moon emerged from a random splash of paint.

Since I have given up on the idea of sleep for tonight too I’m sticking with the galactic theme and am going to veg out with some Doctor Who and Battlestar Galactica:)

I am drinking hot lemon with honey as it’s supposed to sooth sore throats. It tastes blee!!!  I’m sorry Mary Poppins, but sometimes a spoonful of sugar doesn’t help at all!

Thank you for suggesting, http://www.abebooks.com/
I actually found the book for half the price and ordered it!!!!

You are a very talented lady. That is a beautiful painting and you did it sick and with lack of sleep. Amazing.

Again, thank you very much.

Thanks for your kind words about the art.

I hope you enjoy your new book. Isn’t it wonderful to discover a new writer?!

Dear Bad Faery, I am ever so sorry you have been ill and feeling so poorly. I do hope you recover completely and soon. What a bummer. My heart aches for your sad chest trying to get enough breath! OY. OY. OY.

Your blues in the paintings are wonderful, brilliant, and scream of good feelings. Wonderful that you can bring this out of what perhaps is a “feeling blue” period, into a brillant blue explosion of wonderful color.

The Elizabeth Smart you speak of is not the little girl who was kidnapped by the crazy man and his wife, right? Someone else?

Different Elizabeth Smart. She was a Canadian poet and writer who embarked on a passionate affair with the married poet George Barker. ‘By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept’ is a fictionalised account of that affair and is written in very heightened, very beautiful poetic prose.

Thank you for your lovely comments about my little paintings. I had fun with them and I’ll probably do a few more in a similar style.

I’m feeling much better and my voice is back! Hurray! I couldn’t raise it above a hoarse whisper for a few days. I’m back to work tomorrow and looking forward to a return to a normal routine again.
