More books!

About a month ago I decided to try and enforce a no-buying-new-books policy until I had made a concerted assault on the quite frankly staggering amount of unread books I currently own. I, of course, broke it almost immediately by buying a copy of Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf but I’ve been very good ever since. Until yesterday that is. Amazon have a 3 for 2 offer on Oxford World Classics at the moment and as several of the set texts for a couple of my intended OU courses are included I decided to go ahead and order some. It seems a little weird to be ordering books for courses I won’t be starting until 2009/2010 but a bargain’s a bargain so what the hell! I’ll be prepared if nothing else:)

These are the books I’ve ordered:

Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen
Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë
The Awakening, Kate Chopin
The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins
Dombey and Son, Charles Dickens
Middlemarch, George Eliot
Far from the Madding Crowd, Thomas Hardy
Portrait of a Lady, Henry James
Germinal, Emile Zola
(all for AA316 The Nineteenth Century Novel)

Five Plays, Anton Chekhov
Selected Stories, Katherine Mansfield
Orlando, Virginia Woolf
(For A300 20th Century Literature: Texts and Debates)

Teach? Absolutely no way. I’d be a terrible teacher! Nope, I’m doing this mostly for my own satisfaction having missed out of the college experience earlier in life.

I’m a sucker for new books. They smell so goooood!!!

Apart from the financial considerations, is it really possible to own too many books… even unread ones?!
I thought was doing well with my collection, keeping it managable and within reason size-wise until I saw Merisi’s bokshelves with 4000 books!  Now I shall buy all those books I want without the least twinge of remorse… well maybe just a tiny twinge ;-)

You have the perfect excuse… you are doing an English degree… buy, buy, buy I say!
