New art book!
I got this book, Botanical Illustration Course with the Eden Project by Rosie Martin and Meriel Thurstan, last week.
I’ve been drawing flowers this month and my results haven’t been too great so I’m hoping this will give me some inspiration.
The first exercise calls for making tonal strips:
“Tonal strips are test strips that can help you understand just what your pencil can do, and they are useful tools when you come to evaluating and translating the tonal strengths in any given specimen.”
I’ve filled about four pages of my sketchbook with these strips, all the way from 5H to 9B. I don’t feel I’m quite done with them yet.
Here’s a scan of one of the lovely illustrations in the book:
Will I ever be this good? A girl can dream :)
I really need to clean my scanner - look at all those specks of dirt!
Music: ‘Polegnala e Todora (Love Song)’, Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares
Comments:
Oh, it would make a lovely appliqued quilt wall hanging too!
Enjoy your fresh sketch book, your new book and pencils. I await the results of your endeavors.
I am sure you can be this good and then some!
(Tonight I posted some stop stitching I believe you wished to see.)

wow that is a very beautiful book! I’m drooling too! ;)
I wish I could come play with your toys and learn how to do that too...I’ve always wanted to draw better than my 4th grade level ;)

Well I see nothing wrong with your drawing in first photo. I would give my eye teeth to draw as well as you do. But then I guess we are always striving to be better. Lovely book and illustration.
Nice sketch book too. :)
Thank you also for your nice compliment on my sheep painting. what a wonderful compliment coming from you too. :)

I LOVE the look of this book… Hmmmm! Maybe one day I shall be brave and try it. Those fabulous illustrations would look daunting to me. I do like the strips of pencil tones though...right up my street!!
Nice!
PS I missed the Lunar eclipse too - I just plain forgot! Bother!
